Congregation of the Daughters of Mary is a missionary congregation founded by late Msgr. Joseph Kuzhijalil in the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, during the early days of the Re-Union Movent in 1938 at Marthandom, Kanyakumary District, with three members,by the paternal blessing and consent of late Archbishop His Grace Mar Ivanios (Servent of God ). Mother Mary Kallarakal is the Co founders and the first member of the Congregation.
The primary mission of the Congregation is to bring the Good News to the poor and neglected concentrating as families for their integrated development. The congregation was raised to the Pontifical Status in 1988 by His Holiness Pope John Paul II. At present we have 6 provinces .
The Congregation of the Daughters of Mary was bifurcated in 1987. St. Joseph’s Province is one of the mission province in Tamilnadu. The Province comprises of fourty two convents and one Service station. We have 6 houses in abroad, Two houses in Germany and America, one in Tanzania and Italy . There are two houses in Kerala and one in Karnataka State. The sisters are engaged in pastoral assistance in different mission stations of the dioceses, conducts educational institutions upto higher secondary level, Social Service Programmes, Hospital, Dispensaries, hostels, Vocational training centers, Rehabilitation centers, Old age Home, and Orphanages.

The present Provincial Superior is Mother Rose Francis D.M; Sr. Anila Christy D.M, Sr. Lilly Jose D.M, Sr. Sophy Therese D.M, and Sr. Flower John D.M are the provincial councilors. Sr. Rose Paul D.M is the Financial Officer and Sr. Angel Maria D.M is the provincial secretary. The Province consists Two hundred and six sisters and Forteen Candidates .They are doing their formation in different formation houses. The first years (Aspirants) are there in Marthandom the mother house, Postulancy in Vimalapuram ,Higher Secondary studies in Christuraja School,M.J.K.M School and Chellamkonam. Noviciate house in Nagpur under Amala Province Chanda.
The sisters of St. Joseph’s Province Serving in Sixteen Dioceses, They are Marthandom, Trivandrum, Bathery, Moovatupuzha, Pune, Vellore, Chegelpet, Trichy, Palayamkottai, Mandya, Thoothukudy, America, Paderborn, Ausburg, Mbinga and Mantova . Most of our convents are under the patronship of Marthandom Dioceses. The sisters were engaged in all the pastoral activities in each Diocese. Sr. Mary Prasad. Sr. Seline Grace and Sr. Alphonse were dedicated missionaries in Suvishesha Sangam.
Home for Senior Citizens
Changing family patterns of joint family to nuclear family system has contributed to vulnerable situation to many of elders in the encircling regions of St. Joseph’s Province target area. Senior citizens were traumatized by severe psycho-social problems because of ignorance of their young generation in so many ways. Four different homes have been established so far in different locations catering to the need of disadvantaged senior people. There are two homes for senior citizens, one in Plankala and another one in Mathar, Kanyakumari District.
Home For The Children
St.Joseph’s Province have seven homes for children. Most of our children are fully orphan, economically orphan and from sick parents. The opportunity for becoming orphan and destitute is enhanced due to increasing factors which include family separation, sickness, child abuse, child trafficking, loss of parents, unwanted birth and so on. These are our children homes Vimala Bhavan Marthandom(Girls),St.Vincent De Paul Bala Bhavan Chellamkonam(Girls),Sanjoe Children’s home Kanchiyode(Girls),Mother Mary Memorial Boys Home Kaliyal, Christujothi Bala Bhavan Thanippady(Girls)Carmel Matha Children’s Home Elayankanni(Girls) and St. Alphonsa Bala Bhavan(Girls) Edayankulam.
These seven homes provide accommodation,food,clothing,counseling,education,and scripture learning to orphaned and destitute children. These services are absolutely free of charge and are run constantly with community participation. These children come from disadvantaged, marginalized families.

Sisters of St. Josephs Province are dedicated to serve people with chronic disability. A rehabilitation centre is started to help people suffering from the fatal diseases such as leprosy. People accommodated into these rehabilitation homes are provided with accommodation, food, medicine, counseling, alternate self-employment training and direction to initiate own enterprise. So far many people are benefited out of this service.
Emmaus Rehabilitation Center For Mentally Ill women in the Streets
The Congregation of the daughters of the Mary St.Joseph`s Province, Emmaus started in the year 2008. It provides humanitarian care for the mentally ill women in the streets in collaboration with the Government of Tamilnadu. A team of sisters, trained nurses along with other experienced staff provide the necessary nursing care. Qualified and trained Counselors provide needed Regular counseling to the patients. They feel encouraged and find a supportive atmosphere to ventilate their feelings and fears.Presently we have 120 mentally ill women with our care among them 19 inmates are shifted to Thadikarakonam one of our convent.
Hostels For Women
St. Joseph’s Province provides hostel facilities for Working women and Girls from different part of India. There are Six hostels for ladies. They are Assisi Nilayam hostel for Girls in Marthandom, Tara working women hostel in Nagercoil, Women’s hostel in Mariagiri, Sanjoe Bhavan hostel for girls and working women at Bhommanahalli, in Karnadaka District. And hostel for girls in Manalvayal in Kerala State.
Hospital and Dispensaries
St. Joseph’s hospital,Panachamood is one of the hospitals run by sisters of St. Joseph’s Province. Sisters concentrating the health of the people especially for the poor. And also run Dispensaries for the poor people in different villages in Tamilnadu. Carmel Matha Health Clinic at Elayankanny, St. Joseph’s Dispensary Koottar, Udayarkuppom, Vadanallor And Trichy. More than thirty-five sisters were rendering their selfless services in hospital and Dispensaries.
Education has an important role in the missionary apostolate. The schools help to raise intellectual faculties to maturity. It also helps the capacity of promotes the sense of values, prepares for professional life and generates a relationship between the pupil of different character and background. St. Joseph’s Province runs four schools. They are Christuraja Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Marthandam. Little Flower Matric H S S., Pushpagiri, Christu Jyothi Matric H S S., Thanipady, and Tara Primary School, Nagercoil.
